Crochet Stingray Amigurumi
Using soft, fluffy yarn and a crochet hook, you can shape this cute aquatic creature, adding a personal touch with your choice of colors. This project allows you to enjoy crafting while making a charming toy for your collection or as a sweet gift for someone special.
Materials:
- Fluffy yarn (Baby Snuggle Yarn and Honey Bunny Yarn recommended) in white and blue or colors of choice, making sure they are of the same weight.
- 5.5 mm crochet hook (main hook)
- 3.75 mm crochet hook (for weaving in ends)
- Medium weight yarn (for sewing, color won’t be visible)
- Scissors
- Fabric pins
- Stitch marker (or a scrap strand of yarn)
- 12mm safety eyes (plain black)
- Fiberfill (for stuffing)
- Darning needle (for sewing)
Steps:
Stingray Body:
Mouth (Round 1):
- Create a slip knot.
- Chain 11.
- Skip the first chain from the hook, single crochet in the second chain, then single crochet in the next 9 chains (10 single crochets).
Round 2 (Creating Oval):
- Flip to the bottom of the chain.
- Work 10 single crochets along the bottom side. This completes the oval shape. Place your stitch marker.
Rounds 3-4:
- 20 single crochets each round.
Wings (Round 5):
- Single crochet in the first stitch.
- Chain 9, skip the first chain, then single crochet in the next 8 chains.
- Single crochet in the next stitch on the body, then single crochet 8 more times along the edge.
- Repeat for the second wing on the other side. Should have 36 stitches at the end of this round.
Round 6:
- Single crochet around, including the wings' sides, increasing as necessary to end up with 52 stitches.
Eyes Placement:
- Place the 12mm safety eyes between rounds 2 and 3.
Continue Body Shaping:
- Continue decreasing and single crocheting as per the pattern through rounds up to 17, following the decrease and single crochet counts precisely to form the stingray’s body and begin tail shaping.
Tail:
- Continue crocheting in the round from the stingray’s body, decreasing to shape the tail, up to round 29.
- Fill with fiberfill as you go.
- The final round of the tail is a decrease round, ending with 4 stitches. Slip stitch and leave a long tail for sewing.
Belly Plate (Worked in Rows):
- Repeat creating a slip knot, then chain 11.
- Single crochet 10 starting from the second chain from the hook.
- Chain 1 at the end of each row and turn your work to continue.
- Follow specific increase and decrease patterns as given in the transcription to create the belly plate shapes fitting to the body of the stingray.
- The belly plate ends with a decrease row, chain one and cut leaving a tail for sewing.
Assembly:
- Sew the belly plate onto the stingray's body using the medium weight yarn.
- Sew down the edges of the wings to the body to form the stingray’s distinct shape.
- Stuff the body through the opening, making sure the stuffing fills out the shape nicely but doesn’t over-stretch the crochet work.
- Sew the tail round to the body to complete the stingray. Adjust the tail shape as desired by sewing and pulling the yarn to curve it.
