Crochet Triceratops Amigurumi Coaster Pattern

Materials Needed

  • Worsted weight yarn in three colors: white, green, and a lighter shade of green
  • 4.5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch markers in at least two colors
  • 10 mm safety eyes
  • Polyester fiber fill

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: triple (or treble) crochet
  • st: stitch
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • inc: increase (2 sc in the next st)
  • dec: decrease (sc2tog or single crochet two together)
  • Magic ring: adjustable loop

Head

  1. Round 1: Using green yarn, make a magic circle and work 8 sc into the ring. Pull tight to close, but do not join. (8 sc)
  2. Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (16 sc)
  3. Round 3: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around. (24 sc)
  4. Round 4: sc in each st around. (24 sc)
  5. Round 5: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat around. (32 sc)
  6. Round 6: sc in each st around. (32 sc)
  7. Round 7: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat around. (40 sc)

Nostrils (Bobble Stitches)

  1. Round 8: sc in the next st, create bobble stitch in next st by repeating [YO, insert hook, pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops] four times, YO and pull through all loops on hook.
  2. sc in the next 4 sts and repeat bobble stitch.
  3. sc in the remaining sts.

Ears

  1. Round 9: [1 sc in next 3 sts, dec in next st] for ear shaping.

Filling and Eyes

  1. Round 10: Fill with polyester fiber fill.
  2. Attach 10 mm safety eyes between rounds 7 and 8.

Final Shaping

  1. Round 11: [dec in next st, 1 sc in next st] repeat around.
  2. Round 12: Continue decreasing, working in rounds until the head is closed.

Frill

  1. Attach yarn to the front loops of round 9:
  2. [Hdc in next 2 sts, (dc, ch 1, tr, ch 1, dc) all in the next st, hdc in next 2 sts] repeat around.

Small Horn

  1. Round 1: Using white yarn, make a magic circle and 4 sc into the ring. Pull tight to close, but do not join. (4 sc)
  2. Round 2: sc in each st around. (4 sc)
  3. Round 3: Continue working sc in each st. (4 sc)

Horns (make 2)

  1. Follow the Small Horn instructions for both horns using white yarn and repeat the same pattern to create 2 larger horns.

Coaster Body

  1. Round 1: Using green yarn, make a magic circle and work 10 hdc into the ring. Make sure to pull tight to close and join with sl st. (10 hdc)
  2. Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as first dc), dc inc in each st around. Join with sl st. (20 hdc)
  3. Round 3: Ch 2 (does not count as stitch here and in following rounds), [dc inc, 1 dc] repeat around. Join with sl st. (30 hdc)
  4. Round 4: [2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts] repeat around. (40 hdc)
  5. Round 5: [2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts] repeat around. Join with sl st. (50 hdc)

Legs (make 2)

  1. Round 1: Using green yarn, make a magic circle and work 6 sc into the ring. (6 sc)
  2. Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)
  3. Round 3: sc in each st around. (12 sc)
  4. Round 4: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat. (9 sc)
  5. Round 5-7: sc in each st around. (9 sc)
  6. Round 8: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat. (12 sc)
  7. Stuff the legs slightly and fasten off.

Arms (make 2)

  1. Round 1: Using green yarn, make a magic circle and work 6 sc into the ring. (6 sc)
  2. Round 2: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat. (8 sc)
  3. Round 3: sc in each st around. (8 sc)
  4. Round 4: [sc2tog, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat. (6 sc)
  5. Round 5-6: sc in each st around. (6 sc)

Tail

  1. Round 1: Using green yarn, make a magic circle and 4 sc into the ring. (4 sc)
  2. Round 2: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st] around. (6 sc)
  3. Round 3: sc in each st around. (6 sc)
  4. Round 4: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 sts] repeat. (8 sc)
  5. Round 5-6: sc in each st around. (8 sc)
  6. Round 7: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 3 sts] repeat. (10 sc)
  7. Round 8: sc in each st around. (10 sc)
  8. Round 9: [2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 sts] repeat. (12 sc)
  9. Round 10: sc in each st around. (12 sc)

Assembly

  1. Head: Sew the head to the coaster body using the back loops of round 9 using the tail left. Adjust and shape as needed.
  2. Tail: Flatten the last round of the tail and sew it to the opposite side of the coaster from the head.
  3. Legs and Arms: Flatten the last round of both legs and arms, and position them symmetrically around the coaster. Sew them securely in place.
