Quick Crochet Tips for Beginners
1. Choosing the Right Hook Size
- Start with the recommended hook size on the pattern or yarn label. The right size yields even stitches.
2. Keeping Stitches Even
- Maintain consistent yarn tension and use stitch markers to help keep track.
3. Attaching Parts Securely
- Leave long yarn tails on pieces for stitching. Weave the ends in thoroughly for durability.
4. Managing Bulky Yarns and Safety Eyes
- Use a large needle for bulky yarns and place safety eyes before fully assembling.
5. Choosing and Customizing Yarns
- Personalize with your favourite colours of the same-weight yarn for consistency.
6. Stuffing Options
- Choose between poly-fill for softer toys or a pillow ball for a firmer, symmetrical shape.
Consistent practice and attention to these tips will improve your crochet projects!
Making The Crochet Pig Squish

- 8mm crochet hook (Susan Bates mentioned in the video)
- Bernat Baby Blanket yarn
- A bit of Bernat Blanket O'Go yarn (for different parts of the pig)
- Safety eyes (24mm for the main eyes and 14mm for the nostrils)
- Scissors
- Large finishing needles
- Stuffing material or pillow ball
Step by step Pattern
Pig Squish Tail:
- Leave about a foot of yarn before starting for sewing later.
- Create a slip knot and chain 6.
- Skip the chain closest to the hook, and work 3 single crochets into each remaining chain until the end to create the corkscrew appearance.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a tail for sewing, and finish off.
Pig Squish Snout:
- Start by leaving a considerable tail for sewing.
- Make a slip knot on the hook, and chain 6.
- Skip the closest chain to the hook, half double crochet in each of the next five chains for row 1.
- For row 2, turn your work, chain 1, and work half double crochet around the piece.
- In the skipped chain from row 1, place 4 half double crochets.
- Work half double crochets in the bottom of each stitch from row 1.
- Finally, work four more half-double crochets in the other side’s skipped chain from row 1.
- Cut the yarn (measuring around the project 2.5 times for sewing), finish off, and seamlessly join to create an oval.
Pig Squish Ears:
- Start Piece One by leaving a long tail, chain 8.
- Skip closest chain, single crochet, half double crochet, then double crochet in the 5 remaining chains.
- For row 2 of Piece One, turn, start with a chainless starting double crochet, double crochet in next three stitches, half double crochet, single crochet, and then slip stitch in the last stitch.
- Break the yarn, leaving a long tail.
- For Piece Two of the ears, start with a long tail, chain 6.
- Skip closest chain and follow the pattern for Piece One but with slightly fewer stitches due to smaller chain count.
- Break yarn, leaving a long tail and sew Piece Two into Piece One.
- Sew the ears, snout, and tail to the body (as shown in the video tutorials), then add eyes.
Pig Squish Feet:
- Begin with a magic circle and chain 1.
- Work a single crochet, then six half double crochets into the ring for round one.
- For round two, place two half double crochets into each stitch from round one.
- Begin round three with a half double crochet in the first stitch, single crochet in the next five stitches, half double crochet in the next two stitches, single crochet in the next five stitches, and half double crochet in the last stitch.
- For row four, work flat, squishing the top of the foot closed by single crocheting the first stitch to the penultimate stitch from round three and then all across.
- Cut the yarn and finish off.
Construction:
- Stuff the body.
- Sew the feet onto the body.
- Add the belly by crocheting it onto the body, enclosing the stuffing.
Notes:
- The exact placement of the pieces on the body is demonstrated in the video.
- Ensure to add the safety eyes to the snout before attaching it to the body.
