Materials Needed:

  • 5mm crochet hook
  • Darning needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors
  • Black and white super bulky yarn
  • Polyfill stuffing
  • 18mm safety eyes

Crochet Seal

Pattern:

Body:

Magic Ring: Start with a white yarn magic ring.

  • Round 1: 3 SC, 3 DC bobble (repeat twice in the magic ring). You should have 8 stitches by the end of the round.
  • Round 2: Increase (repeat 8 times around). You should have 16 stitches by the end of the round.
  • Round 3: SC, Increase (repeat 8 times). You should have 24 stitches by the end of the round.
  • Round 4: 2 SC, Increase (repeat 8 times). Increase to 32 stitches.
  • Rounds 5-7: SC around for 32 stitches per row.

Step 1

Round 8: Insert safety eyes between Rounds 3 and 4 and secure them. 5 SC, 5 DC bobble, 6 SC, another 5 DC bobble, 19 SC (32 stitches total).

  • Rounds 9-13: SC around for 32 stitches per row.
  • Round 14: 2 SC, Decrease (repeat 8 times). You should have 24 stitches by the end of the round.
  • Round 15: SC around for 24 stitches.
  • Round 16: SC, Decrease (repeat 8 times). You should have 16 stitches by the end of the round.
  • Round 17: SC around for 16 stitches.
  • Start stuffing the seal.
  • Round 18: Decrease 8 times (8 stitches total).

Step 2

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing, and finish stuffing your seal.

Step 3

Fins:

  • Create a slip knot with your white yarn and chain 5.
  • Row 1: Increase in the first stitch, SC in the next two chains, four SC in the last chain. Flip work and on the opposite side, SC in the next two chains, and Increase in the last stitch (12 stitches total).
  • Row 2: SC around (12 stitches).
  • Row 3 (Fins): Decrease, 2 SC, 2 Decreases, 2 SC, 1 Decrease. Create two of these.
  • Row 4: For the first fin, make 4 Decreases. Move to the second fin and make another 4 Decreases (8 stitches total per fin).
  • Row 5: SC around for 8 stitches.

Step 4

Fasten off the fins, no need to leave a long tail.

Assembly:

  • Sew the tail onto the body, ensuring it lays horizontally.
  • Close any gap between the fins on the tail with white scrap yarn.
  • Embroider the nose with black yarn across the 3 SC from the first row, making a horizontal line, and then form a triangle with the point in the center of the magic ring. Fill in the triangle shape.
