How To Crochet Amigurumi Octopus

Materials Required:

  • Two different colors of yarn (main color and a contrasting color for the bow or spots)
  • Big Twist Posh Yarn (weight 5 bulky yarn recommended)
  • US H (5 mm) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • 20 mm safety eyes (sparkly back or black as preferred)
  • Stitch marker
  • Fiber fill for stuffing

Abbreviations:

  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
  • dec: decrease (2 stitches together using front loops only)

Body:

  1. Create Magic Ring:
    • Wrap the yarn around three fingers and cross it over.
    • Insert the hook under the top yarn piece and pull through.
    • Remove from fingers and ch 1 to secure the ring.
  2. Round 1:
    • 8 sc in the magic ring.
    • Pull the tail to close the ring.
  3. Round 2:
    • 2 sc in each stitch (inc in each stitch around) - 16 sc.
  4. Round 3:
    • 1 sc in the first stitch, inc in the next stitch; repeat around - 24 sc.
  5. Round 4:
    • 1 sc in the first stitch, 1 sc in the second stitch, inc in the third stitch; repeat around - 32 sc.
  6. Rounds 5-9:
    • 1 sc in each stitch around (no increase) - 32 sc per round.
  7. Round 10:
    • 1 sc in the first stitch, 1 sc in the second stitch, dec in the next two stitches - 24 sc.

Eyes:

  1. Attach Eyes:
    • Place the eyes between Rounds 8 and 9.
    • Position them with about 2 stitches between them.
    • Secure with the safety backs.
    • Optionally, add a little white yarn around the eyes for additional detailing: Secure the white yarn in place by pulling through the top of the eye, traveling down ¾ way, pulling back through, and securing with knots inside the body.

Tentacles:

  1. Tentacle:
    • Ch 11.
    • Starting from the second chain from the hook, 2 dc in each chain across (total of 20 dc).
    • Skip the next stitch on the body round (Round 10).
    • Attach the tentacle by slip stitching into the front loop of the next two stitches.
  2. Repeat:
    • Repeat tentacle steps for a total of 8 tentacles.

Finishing the Body:

  1. Round 11:
    • Using back loops of unworked stitches from Round 10, 1 sc in the first stitch, dec in the next two stitches; repeat around - 16 sc.
    • Start stuffing with fiber fill.
  2. Round 12:
    • Dec around (in front loops) - 8 sc.
    • Cut yarn, pull tail, and weave through front loops of the remaining stitches to close the hole.
    • Secure with a few stitches.

Bow (Optional):

  1. Row 1:
    • Ch 9.
    • In 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each stitch across - 8 sc.
  2. Rows 2-3:
    • Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each stitch across - 8 sc.
    • Finish off and weave in ends.
  3. Middle:
    • Wrap yarn around center multiple times.
    • Secure it.
    • Use long tail to sew onto the octopus.

    Attaching the Bow:

    • Sew the bow onto the octopus where desired.

Spots (Optional):

  1. Spot:
    • Create a magic ring.
    • 6 sc into the ring.
    • Slip stitch to the first sc to close the ring.
    • Cut yarn with a long tail.
  2. Attach:
    • Make three spots and sew them onto the top of the octopus’s head.

Conclusion:

  • Weave in and secure all ends.
